Having had lots of fun designing a house that turned out to be much bigger than anticipated (or budgeted for) we now had not much more than empty land and some expensive house art. Having years ago tried to build a small mudbrick hut by hand (with a back that was fifteen years younger) we knew we weren’t the people to build the house unaided.
We went to a couple of traditional builders only to realize they thought we were mad and they were not shy of hiding the fact. We contacted several of the strawbale building outfits who were all very approachable but very busy.
We were stuck! So what next? Whilst literally meditating on this dilemma I discussed it with an old friend who also went to the same meditation group. His background was as a traditional carpenter and was looking to build himself an eco-friendly house and was happy to use ours as a learning experience. We all attended strawbale building courses and our builder launched a new line of business as “Last Straw Constructions”. Including ourselves we now had a team of four.
